A short while later, Mavis Walcott spied Janet from her table as she came through the entrance to Wiltons restaurant in Jermyn Street.

‘What a beautiful jacket. You’re obviously doing well, working with your husband.’

Janet smiled, tapping her jacket. ‘I’ve had this old thing a while, Mavis.’ She sat down opposite and lifted the menu. ‘Have you been here before?’

Walcott shook her head. ‘I’ve walked past a few times, but never had the opportunity to come in.’ She picked up the menu. ‘So, what do you recommend?’

‘Well, if you like fish, I can recommend the poached Halibut. It’s one of their specialty dishes.’

Mavis put down her menu. ‘Well, I’ll go with your suggestion, then.’

The waiter approached and Janet ordered the meals. ‘And a bottle of Muscadet, please.’ she added.

The waiter withdrew and Walcott looked around at the other diners.

Janet lit a cigarette and offered one to her companion. ‘I haven’t been here for a while, I hope the Halibut hasn’t changed.’

‘You don’t get out much then?’

‘Not really, things are quite busy. We’ve just expanded on personnel. When I joined Alex, there were just the three of us, Alex, then Arthur Gable, the former Scotland Yard detective, who Alex had worked with while still head of A Section, retired, and his son, Andrew, also a former detective, took over. Now, since January, when we moved to the bigger office, we’ve added two new members to our little tribe.’

The waiter returned with the wine and opening the cork, poured a small amount into the glass for Janet to taste.

After nodding her approval, the two women sat in silence as he filled their glasses then left.

Mavis Walcott raised her glass. ‘Cheers, Janet. Here’s to lost times.’

They chinked glasses

Janet flicked some ash into a cut glass ashtray shaped like a fish. ‘So how are things in records. I take it they’re still in order?’

‘Walcott chuckled. ‘Absolutely, I don’t let a thing out of there without a signature, and I even get them to tell me when things can be expected back. Tell a lie – I’m doing an internal audit on the pink personnel files at the moment – it’s not normally like me as I seem to have lost one.’

‘I can’t say I miss the old job. I remember I lost a couple of pink files once – caused a bit of a panic. I was just going to report them, when I found they’d been misfiled by a junior. Mind you, in that dimly lit room. It was surprising we could find anything down there.’

‘Oh, don’t forget that was the old place your referring to. Our new building has more lighting, and air conditioning as well. I expect you have your own desk and everything where you need it?’

‘Yes, it meets my needs, shall we say.’

The waiter returned with their meals and Janet thanked him.

Walcott examined her plate. ‘I have to agree the Halibut looks exquisite.’

‘Just wait until you taste it.’

Cutting a piece off, Walcott placed it into her mouth. ‘Oh, Janet, it’s beautiful.
